10 Ways to Save Money While Visiting New York City

September 1, 2021

New York City is a great place to visit. There is a lot to do there and you can find just about anything you want to do as this is a city that is filled with just about every kind of entertainment, whether it is theatre, museums, sports, parks, restaurants, or any other kind of activity.

Sadly, some of these activities can be quite expensive. You want to enjoy your time in the city that never sleeps, but you can quickly find your budget broken if you are not careful. What is important to realize is that you can do a lot of fun things in NYC without spending a lot of money. Here are 10 great cost saving tips for your visit to the Big Apple.

Central Park

Central Park is one of the most famous parks on the planet, providing a spectacular place to enjoy beautiful scenery in a peaceful park in one of the busiest places on the planet. Best of all, you can enjoy this park free of charge, as you can walk, lay out on the grass, or feed a pigeon or two (there are plenty of those around).

Street/Subway Performers

You might be amazed to hear this, but some of the best live performances you will ever hear will be along the streets and subway terminals in New York City. There are amazing musical artists who perform just about every style of music you could imagine. In fact, you are likely to be introduced to some styles and instruments that you may not have known existed. What makes these performances even better is that they are free of charge. You can give the artist a few dollars if you so desire, but even if you do you are still saving a lot of money.

The Statue of History

The iconic statue is an $18 ferry ride, which does not sound cheap at all. However, if you take the Staten Island ferry it is free. That sounds amazing and it is. You can go from Staten Island and pay nothing to get to the statue. Now, if you want to go to the top you will have to pay the cost of a ticket, but you simply want to get up close to the Statue, this is a free way to do so.

Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most famous bridges on earth, connecting Brooklyn with Manhattan. When it opened in 1883 it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and is still one of the most beautiful on earth, frequently used as the backdrop in television shows and movies. As part of building the bridge, there is a pedestrian crossing that allows you to go across the bridge for free.

Zoos and Gardens

Many of the zoos and gardens in New York can be costly, but there are a number you can visit that are free. This includes the Staten Island Botanical Garden, New York Botanical Garden and Queens Botanical Garden. You can also go to the Staten Island and Queens zoos for just $8.

Earn Money for Referrals

This may not seem like much of a site to see, but there are several areas in NYC where specific ethnic groups have set up little slices of their homeland, like Chinatown, Little Italy, and Greenwich Village. You can see amazing sites and visit great shops that will make you feel like you entered a whole new country.

Times Square

Like Central Park, Times Square is one of the most iconic places on earth and you can enjoy walking around seeing a place that is often shown in movies and do it free of charge. This is the place where a million people will gather on New Year’s Eve to see the ball drop and you can enjoy a lot of fun places to shop and just look in this legendary square.

Street Art

Like the street and subway performers, there are a number of incredible artists whose work you can see along the streets in the Bushwick neighborhood. You will be amazed at the talent level of many of these artists and the best part of seeing it is that there is no cost. If art is your thing, you will love the skill and passion involved.

Get a Metro Pass

Want to take in a lot of New York? Get a metro pass and spend the day travelling around the city on the subway system. For a few dollars you can see place after place, really embracing the city and all it has to offer and it costs you just a few dollars to do so.

Wall Street

The financial capital of the world is a great place to visit. While you will not get down on the stock exchange floor, you can still visit around Wall Street and see another of the most talked about places on earth.

As you can see, you can do a lot in New York City and spend no more than just a few dollars. It is a great way to keep your budget in check and enjoy New York at its finest.
